Now, they want to start non-profits and "safe houses".

I don't even have the energy to explain to them why this is a bad idea, let alone the history of it being done before.
Monday, May 26th, 2008 04:02 pm (UTC)
On the plus side, do you really think they'll manage to be organized enough to have the money to make any of these things happen?
Monday, May 26th, 2008 04:06 pm (UTC)
HOPE/HOPE-CORDE/Paranexus was possibly the most disorganized "organization" in the history of any community, and it managed to pull of nonprofit status for a while. Like the tags said, history repeats....
Monday, May 26th, 2008 08:34 pm (UTC)
If they used the regular 501(c)3 sections (rather than the specific sections for church incorporation), it's actually dead easy to set up as a nonprofit--just get a board of directors together, and incorporate as a nonprofit.

(This is one of the things that especially kills me on this whole mess--it is *far* easier to incorporate as a regular 501(c)3 than as a church in most states. Most neopagan groups incorporate as 501(c)3 LLCs because it's far less of a legal PITA than trying to prove that you do have regular meetings of fifty persons or more and one of your members is in the "regular care of souls" and whatnot.)
Monday, May 26th, 2008 07:20 pm (UTC)
Yup, this pretty much definitively proves they're trying to set this up specifically as a tax shelter (as I noted in my own post, there is no legitimate reason for them to pull this, and going specifically for *religious* exemptions at that, unless they're trying to set up a tax shelter--and unstated so far (but about to be very publically stated), no reason to go for the *religious* exemption in particular unless they're trying to make a tax shelter which is in practice very hard to trace funds going in or out.

Gets better too... the twit has Ahril's twin dagger symbol on his myspace page.
Monday, May 26th, 2008 08:18 pm (UTC)
...and why am I not surprised? :P
Monday, May 26th, 2008 09:04 pm (UTC)
===Ah, yes....I now understand why they think of the Elenari as a religion. (chuckles)

Do the priest robes require red sashes? Or is that just for the *cough* guards?
Monday, May 26th, 2008 11:36 pm (UTC)
Okay, I realize this is probably a stupid question, but what significance does that have? I've never heard of Ahril before, and googling it brings up nothing that seems useful (most interesting link was to a JSTOR page).

Legitimate reason would imply logic. I'm not sure it's present.
Monday, May 26th, 2008 10:42 pm (UTC)
I tend to agree. This is an 18 year old kid not even out of highschool yet, I'm not sure he's smart enough to know what a tax shelter is.
Thursday, May 29th, 2008 03:45 am (UTC)
I'm pretty sure logic left the building on this particular matter quite some time ago.
Monday, May 26th, 2008 07:23 pm (UTC)
I guess the militia will be next.
Monday, May 26th, 2008 08:32 pm (UTC)
Probably--I mean, the guy just has all but admitted they're forming an Elenari Supremacist group under the guise of religion...

...funny, I know of some asshats like that in this part of the country, too. They even use the fantasy references (like Grand Wizard and Grand Dragon and what all) and go on about how they're the Best Race and are just trying to Save The Future Of Their People--oh, and they also wear sheets and go around burning crosses and trying to terrorise all the Non-White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestant folks, too.

My dear, I think we may just have found the Elven Klan here. :D

*imagines redneck elves burning seven pointed stars and shouting Elenari power!*

===Eh, I am not sure of that. It sounds more like a lower-level thing, born out of one person realizing their difference, and wanting to protect that difference. That does not make a person a supremacist.

===I think your influx of information probably dissuaded them on that, and they may be more open to hearing how most elven and otherkin that are not insane act.

On a much lighter note: stainless steel frying pan without a nonstick surface == win. I inherited more old cookware from my grandfather when he passed. Old cookware is so much better than the modern shit sometimes. :)

It would probably look good on the drawing board but it would not even take off.
Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 12:48 am (UTC)
I'd think that too if it hadn't taken several years of concerted effort by me and other ex-members to destroy HOPE when it was on that path. It doesn't seem like it would take off, but somehow it always seems to.

(Also, hi, I followed your link to the list--which does not work, by the way--and ended up here and could not resist commenting on your lj entries about the matter)
