To all otherkin on my friends list, particularly those who are the moderators of kin LJ communities, kin lists, or other resources:

It has come to my attention that someone has, possibly with good but misguided intentions (though that is debatable), posted about the concept of otherkin to the livejournal "debate" community. Judging by the number of reactions which challenge the user's stated heterosexuality and capacity to get dates, rather than the issues he brought up, I believe it is safe to say that this community is a flamepit. There are also signs that members of this community are following links back to other major otherkin resources... the otherkin FAQ on kinhost has already been referenced in the course of their current flamings. To make matters worse, this flamewar has been advertised on http://www.ljdrama.org, which has only served to add fuel to the fire. I wanted to warn everyone about this, so that they wouldn't be caught unaware by any fallout from this incident which may reach their own lists or journals.

Thanks go to megmurry for alerting me to this development earlier tonight.

*shrugs* I see no basis to assume that this sort of behavior is unique to humanity.... and quite frankly, I think the otherkin in question is at least as much to blame as they are, since simply looking at the previous posts in that community shows that such a reaction by them was not merely likely but downright guaranteed.

Okay, let me rephrase that. This is precisely why I can't stand most namegiving races in general, or, more to whit, the politics and goddamned pissing contests therein. :p

(Remind me to add the "meta" when referring to namegiving races in general. I know all too well these lovely pissfests are not exclusive to humans, or even two-leggeds :p)

Sometimes I think people should just be quiet about being "other". We were far safer when we kept out mouthes shut about it but being alone is.. well lonely. I mean just knowing you are out there makes me feel better... Knowing these jerks are out there makes me feel worse...

Sorry - this just hits really close to home. I am glad you shared but it just reminds me how removed I am from people and why.

I don't think that we necessarily need to be quiet about being otherkin... but going to a community which has a history of flaming rather than true logical debate and posting to it in an agressively defensive manner about unsupportable spiritual beliefs of any stripe, particularly an unusual one like that of otherkin, seems naive at best and downright asking for it at worst.

That impression is only strengthened by going to the individual's journal and seeing him ask if people think he's a hero for doing it or not.
