Amidst job hunting I've decided that it's time to update my skills in web design, since assistant webmaster is probably one of the best jobs on my resume. I always thought that I'd have a ton of catching up to do, but it looks to me like I've been misunderstanding the relations between certain things and they might not be as hard to figure out as I once thought. HTML's connection to DHTML for example... I thought DHTML was a language related to but slightly different from HTML, like XHTML. From what I'm reading now, though, it actually refers to the combination of HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, and web scripting. Two out of those three I know (though I need to become familiar with some of the HTML tags that I have paid less attention to, such as the div tag) so I'm almost two thirds of the way done learning DHTML. I've found some very nice online resources and borrowed a few books from the local library, and am giving myself a briskly paced refresher course in the things I once knew and a crash course in the things I never got around to learning but should have. If I can update my skills for coding pages, add in some skills for server-side scripting, and figure out how all of that can be interfaced with databases, I might actually be able to get involved in real web design work again. Or at least be in a better position to do so than I am now. So far it's going well... I'm understanding the concepts and I might even start using some of the things I'm learning to code test pages sometime tomorrow. *chuckles* Might even update the wanderingpaths site while I'm at it, since I'm thinking more and more that it just doesn't look quite right to me. I can make it look better. And should, if I'm even considering web design work.
