This morning, my mother came storming into the house in a panic... seems that her trunk had somehow been open all night and a lot of paperwork and manuals for her job had gotten wet as a result. (She's the manager of five photolabs and keeps much of her materials for that in the car so she can be as mobile as possible and deal with problems and such at all five as needed.)

Thing is, she and my father did not leave the trunk open. We're almost certain. And I heard a sound like someone closing a car door late last night... I had gone to the door and put on the outside light and didn't see anyone near the cars, or notice anything wrong with them, but I'm reasonably sure that someone *was* in them since MY passenger-side door was slightly ajar and neither of my parents have been in it and it wasn't ajar any of the times that I've driven it recently. But nothing was taken... weirdness. Next time I hear something like that when I shouldn't, I'm taking my sword and going out to check on the cars then and there... trying to dry out all her paperwork this morning was not fun, though I think we managed to save most of it.

Is there a trunk release button in the glovebox? If not, I don't know how they would open your trunk short of having a lockpick set or a key that worked.

If so, I'd recommend keeping the car doors locked at night. And I'd advise against going outside in the dark with a sword... the person may come equipped with a handgun and do something stupid like fire it if you surprise them out there.

There's a trunk release button on the floor next to the driver's seat in my mother's car... normally we don't really bother with locking our cars while we're parked at home, we have a long driveway and are well away from the road, and live out in a rather rural area with little crime. You're probably right about the gun vs sword thing, though honestly I can't imagine anyone who would have brought a gun leaving without taking anything. Personally I have a feeling it may have been one of our neighbors doing stupid shit while drunk, but I could be wrong.

My mother is having similar problems. My sister was actually trapped in the bathroom waiting for the police while someone strolled nonchalantly through the house. In this case, however, we have a new subdivision going in next to our 'rural' property, and we're pretty sure it's ex-city dweller children who don't have a clue about country social rules and the likelihood that your neighbor is well armed.

These people have been taking stuff, though, and it's starting to tick is all off.

I hope you have no repeat of this.
