1) Defending the reputation of a friend or friends being unjustly mocked in a public forum: this is good, honorable.

2) Defending the reputation of said friend or friends by airing *private* details of their lives on a public forum that's known *solely* for mocking others whose websites they find on the intarweb: this is not good. Really not good.

Is everyone clear on this?

Do not cross this line with me.

Edit: Just because it is so damned appropriate, I needed to add this quote from Scrubbs - "People are just bastard covered bastards with bastard filling".

Okay, now I want to know.
Monday, November 27th, 2006 07:43 pm (UTC)
Sorry, no. This incident involved other people's personal information, which I will not be sharing (even with you, bro.) This post addressed the dynamic behind the incident, I'm not going to get into specifics.

Hn. Well you do understand that in making a post like this people are going to want to know, as it attracts attention. I wasn't asking for personal information, anyway.

That said, I do hope the situation gets resolved soon.

I realize. I'll be giving them all the same answer, too. Sadly, the specifics of this situation can't really be discussed without giving away personal information. And while an unknown third party has already made that information public on a decidedly hostile forum, I see no reason to further direct people's attention to it, particularly when it is information which I have in the past been asked to keep to myself. I am hoping to use this post to draw attention, instead, to the behavior patterns behind the incident, and hopefully help create an environment where they are less accepted.

I was about to ask just what in the hell brought this on, but...sadly, there *is* all too much of this stuff going on in the otherkin community :P

(I honestly don't know who all this involves, and if it doesn't involve me, frankly I'd rather that I *not* know whom it involves at this point :P)
Monday, November 27th, 2006 09:31 pm (UTC)
It does not. I've already privately contacted the person it would most directly concern.

Okay, all good.

And yeah, I think it's crap like that what puts the absolute lie to claims that asshattery is a purely human trait. (I'd dare say it's a trait that is common across namegiving races in general, if not sentients in general. I'm sure that somewhere out there, there are asshat *octopi*. :P)

Someone defended someone by saying "no he's not ____, look, here's ten pictures of him at work and by the way here is his home address, see he doesn't live in his parents' basement because they live ___" kind of thing?

good job.

Not exactly, but reasonably close to that. I'm not able to go into details beyond what I've already said, as it might enable people to find the incident in question, thus spreading around the personal information of the people involved even further. But essentially it is that sort of situation, yes.

*facepalm* Ye gods--politics.
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 02:58 am (UTC)
I'm not sure I understand how this could be considered political...
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 03:01 am (UTC)
Small-scale politics--ie, mudslinging and drama. Basically the same stuff that happens on an international scale, only limited this time to, apparently, one particular locale on ten intarwebz, or so you've mentioned.
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 03:06 am (UTC)
Ah. To some degree, yes. However, I care far less about the mudslinging going on by anonymous strangers who have nothing better to do with their time than collect sites and people to mock, than I am about the "defender" who chose to air someone else's private matters in public as a response to simple mudslinging. In this case, the "defense" was much worse than any problems posed by those actually trying to be offensive.

*nod* I can definitely see that.
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 05:17 pm (UTC)
The person who did that is not a friend, of course.
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 07:10 pm (UTC)
That's an understatement in my opinion.
