Just a little random thought, appropriate to nothing:

I've always thought that if I ever organized a major otherkin gather of my own, I'd like to have it at a campground with cabins. My reasoning has always been that I love the chance to be out in nature, walking the trails and the meadows and through the trees, but tents just aren't that comfortable and they leak easily when it rains and they're not conducive to storing things safely or having large numbers of people camped out in them for workshops and stuff (Though i will say that the use of the pavilions for that at Thresholds in the last few years have been a great improvement during inclement weather.) Now, I'm not so sure. There are other settings that might equally suit me. A gathering at a large home in a rural area would be one example, where we could make use of both the indoor and outdoor settings as needed. Certain suburban areas might also suit my needs, depending on how they interacted with the surrounding wilderness. I'm not sure this is going to become an issue anytime soon, though I do eventually expect that I will try my hand at gather organization somewhere down the road, many years in the future, but if and when it does I'm going to take a good look at exactly what I would have hoped to get from the cabin scenario at its core and see if cabins really are the best way to achieve that, or if other options would make more sense.

I seriously considered this option for Hollow Hills since Big Basin has "tent cabins" (as they call them) onsite. The main issues were

A) size limitation - I had to reserve X number and if more people than allowed per cabin showed, we would have had a problem with the group being scattered

B) people being uncertain about whether they would want to share space with a bunch of strangers (individual tents are private)

C) expense, which is somewhat aggravated by B (the fewer people per cabin, the greater the price per person).

Call me weird but I rather enjoy the tents and such--with or without rain. I actually felt more comfortable at CtT than WtT because of the rain and lack of oppressive heat. Then again, as I've said before, I've slept in worse :P

I am finding that such gatherings where ever you have them is a lot of work and consumes a lot of time. When you are not organizing you are planning the next one. Some times it works and some times it is work. *grin*

I've actually had the thought that a winter gather someplace with cabins would be nice.

... I cannot even begin to express how much you rock for having said this. I know it was a while ago, but it just triggered some thoughts and associations for me as I went back over some old entries and read it again. A winter gather may just be perfect...

I think it would be nice. No one does a winter gather. When we were putting together Dance of Danu, we had actually thought about doing a beach gather, as well, unfortunately camping on the beach in the summer would cause some heat issues for people. It may be something to think of for the spring, though, that way we'd hit the full range of seasons for gathers.

Kin North does, but I have no issue competing with them these days. And theirs has never been an outdoor oriented gathering anyway. And a winter gather would not compete with either WtT or CtT (or Dance of Danu, for that matter.) I think if I ever get around to running my own gather, it's going to be a winter one. Already working on some logistics for it.

Well Dance of Danu is pretty much dead so there's no competition there. If you'd like some help organizing a winter gather, let me know. I'd be more than up for it.
