Overlap?

This may make some of my woo-woo type friends go "duh", but to the best of my recollection I haven't heard anyone describe the cause of thin spots in quite this way. More often it seems assumed that all of the various otherworlds, whatever they may be, overlap with the earth at all points. Which is a model that is starting to make much less sense to me...
