... my father is preparing to go into the hospital again for more amputation. And it's not just the foot they're giving up on, they're giving up on everything below the knee. The wound from his first two surgeries just won't heal, the circulation is not good enough below the knee. This move is, from what he told me, apparently based on the idea that the wound likely will become infected sooner or later (though it presently is not) and in that circumstance two surgeries would be required rather than one. It's also believed it will help him with pain he has been experiencing relating to the original amputations on his foot.

Folks, if you have diabetes or think you might be prone to it, get tested and get managing it as early as possible. Seriously. Don't ever just let it go, don't EVER just ignore your diagnosis if you are diagnosed with it, take care of your shit and do something proactive about it. 'cause this is what happens when you don't.

Edit: to add to my concerns about this surgery, I've just learned that part of the reason for this proposed surgery is complications from the last one. Apparently his foot came out of the last surgery with three additional wounds, not just the one from the original amputation that they were trying to help close. These three wounds were pressure wounds from the bandages, and are also not healing. Since the same doctors who proposed that surgery as his best option are now pushing for this one, that leaves something of a bitter taste in my mouth.
