First, to the linux experts reading my journal: I've apparently borked my copy of KMail. It keeps turning my pop3 account into an imap account and then complaining about not being able to download from it. It also changes the address of the pop3 server into "postoffice". I'm not really sure what I did to cause this. I've tried reinstalling the program and restarting the computer, and both deleting and recreating the account, so far nothing has worked. It keeps changing it. It even changes while the program is open and running and has successfully checked mail once with a fresh copy of my account info. Any ideas what I can do to fix this? I haven't been able to find any descriptions of someone else having this problem online so far, much less how to fix it.

Second, completely unrelated, y'all should read this: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/30/magazine/30liberal.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2

Finally it seems that people are starting to *get* that the "cultural wars" embedded in modern politics hinge on the stories, the mythic realities, espoused by both parties and that the Dems so far have not even begun to frame their truths within such a story. On the other hand, Republicans not only consistently frame things in the form of interconnected stories, they do it both consciously and blatantly, even writing articles on how to do it better. And for the most part, the liberals just sit there and ignore the fact that the Republicans are blatantly exposing their playbook with such articles, and go about what they've been doing rather than adjusting their tactics accordingly. This article has some very good insights into that, though I will say I do not agree entirely with some of the foreign policy the author goes on to espouse.

Third: We didn't have an anthem before 1931. And the one we adopted as our anthem then had already been translated into spanish by our own US Bureau of Education in 1919. It's also been translated into numerous other languages. So pushing this Star Spangled Banner in English Only stuff is just silly. Whether you like Nuestro Himno or not, it's really not the big deal people are making it out to be. I have other thoughts on the whole issue of immigration (legal and illegal) as well, but I think they probably deserve their own entry and I'll get to them later.
