I learned something tonight that has been troubling me.
My grandfather's been seeing my grandmother.
You might ask, "What's odd with that?" Well, I'll tell you. My grandmother has been dead for years.
Some of you might still ask, "What's odd with that?" And certainly, I'm not generally one to look a gift haunting in the mouth. My beliefs leave quite a bit of room for the spirits of loved ones to visit the living. And I've had my share of them do so, over the years. Including that very grandmother. This is different.
My mother and my aunt just visited my grandfather, and according to them things are not going well. His house is in poor repair, needing repairs both inside and out. What's more, it has not been kept clean. This is somewhat understandable, given that my grandfather is both an older man and his eyesight has been failing him. But he is stubbornly resisting getting outside help to come clean his house. And he's also resisted replacing some things that are broken around the house, like his telephone, despite them offering to take him to get it replaced.
How does this relate to seeing my grandmother? Well, when my mother and aunt suggested he move in with one or the other of them, or trying to get the house more fixed up, his reply apparently involved the fact that he sees their mother around the house still, and he's waiting for her to tell him what to do.
I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do about my grandfather. I'm not sure if I'm even in a position to do anything. Right now, my best thought is to try to ask my grandmother for her advice, if I can contact her. She knows him better than I do, after all, and might have insight into this situation that I, and my parents and aunt, lack. But I feel that, whatever happens, I may need to make a trip back to New Jersey for a visit and face-to-face talk with him before all of this is settled.
