This is just a collection of thoughts about a story I'm working on writing currently. A faerie tale in the Lovecraftian style, sort of a blend between the Color out of Space and the concept of "Stars Within the Earth". Though I'm going in rather different directions. I do think there will still be horror of a sort... supernatural creatures like this variety of Faerie can be terrifying as well as beautiful. But I don't think that it's going to be about any insidious menace like in the Color Out of Space. We'll see, though, I'm still refining my premise and I'm not entirely certain where it will lead me by the time I'm done.
It's probably obvious already that I got the idea from hanging out with
rialian... his mom was reading the Color out of Space while in labor with him, if I recall correctly, and his interest in both the Lovecraftian Mythos and in the Deep Fae have been rather infectious over the years.
His family too is influencing my writing... much of the setting is being adapted from my memories of staying at his family's place in West Virginia several years ago. It was my most rustic living experience, and I think will fit in quite nicely, though of course I don't intend it as an exact reproduction and will be taking many creative liberties with the descriptions. Some of the characters are also absorbing traits from his family.... though I'm being very careful not to let any of the characters become a depiction of a single real person. His father's propensity to read science fiction and fantasy magazines while hunting has always absolutely fascinated me and I'm really trying to see if I can work that in for one of the characters, for example... but I'm only going to if I decide it fits in well with the overall premise of the story. I'm still not sure if hunting fits the rest of the mood of the story.
I'm also being influenced by some people not in Ri's family, but for now I won't say just who... have to have some surprises left for people to find out when they read it. :)
So far, I know there are going to be at least three characters. An older man, a husband and father, most likely a "widower". A younger man, not sure how young just yet, who is the older man's son. And a woman, fae, who is the older man's wife and the younger man's mother. I don't believe that either of the men knew she was fae, and may not know she is still alive yet.... but the older man may... still trying to work that out. I think that she has been quietly watching over them, most likely in nonhuman (animal? weather?) forms... but something that happens in the course of the story is going to force her to act more openly than she has, maybe even forcing her to reveal herself altogether and expose her secret. I had been thinking she was going to be a "good" Fae, and have another character as a "bad" Fae, to act the part of the antagonist but now I'm considering having her be bad instead... or at least, not as good. It's going to be tricky to find the right balance here to scare in the lovecraftian style without implying evil. Might have to go for horror through sheer implication of inhumanity. Not sure yet.
Somehow, this is all blending together in my mind with thoughts of Aumakua manifestations, the menehune, and the Akua of Hawaii, particularly Pele. I'm thinking elements of those myths would fit in very well in a story like this, and as I've said before there are definite parallels between the concept of the Akua and the concept of the Deep Fae as I currently understand both. Looking forward to exploring that a bit more.
