Well, yesterday was my first day of work at Spanky's, and I was rather pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
As it turns out, working "deli" at Spanky's means working in their kitchen, and basically performing the duties of a short-order cook. It's a little intimidating, especially since the only real instructions for how to make everything is the ingredients list on the menu, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. I worked alone in the kitchen, with assistance from the Manager, for two hours last night after the other "deli" worker who trained me (himself only on his second day of work there) went home at 7pm. I could have gone home then if I had wanted to, and let him stay, but I had just started at 5pm and I didn't want to leave so quickly on my first day, I wanted to get some more practice in, and it was a slow night anyway. So slow that for quite a bit of it our manager invited us to sit with her at the bar, talk and watch TV with her (cops followed by fear factor), snack if we wanted to, and even smoke if we wanted to, rather than just standing around waiting for a customer to show up. It did eventually pick up a little bit, but I don't think we're really going to be busy until the JMU students start coming back in droves.
All in all (and this comparison might sound weird) working at Spanky's strongly reminds me of all the good things about working in the army, without any of the negative things. Working there feels very similar to being on KP duty, but with coworkers and a boss who are nice rather than having huge sticks up their ass like the army people often did. I think I'm really going to enjoy working there. Guess time will tell... I go in again in an hour, and I'll be working till we hit a point where they don't need me anymore for the day, depending on how many customers we get.
