Gay Marriage Question:

I've been doing more reading on the whole gay marriage debate, and I need to ask people something: why do those who oppose gay marriage make such a big deal about the fact that not all gay men (and/or lesbian women) seek the right to marry their partners? It strikes me that it's a lot like writing a press release about the fact that not all straight couples are ready for, or even desire, being married. Why is it newsworthy? Hell, why is it even noteworthy? I really don't get it.
