I find my approach to web-design being increasingly influenced by a phrase which I came across in my research of sustainable development: "appropriate technology". *grins* The criteria need to be adapted a bit, but essentially are just as appropriate for application to the internet medium. I find this interesting as, in my opinion, appropriate technology is a concept which has strong parallels to the official policy on technology on Alorya.

I felt yesterday a lot like the Flows were jerking me around. First it seemed like they were providing a chance for me to redesign a site that I was formerly responsible for, already familiar with the goals and needs of the administration of the organization which owns it, and had a clear idea how to make a site which fit their needs. Then, in an equally random coincidence the site started being updated again, which at the very least means I will have to wait until the end of the school year to put in a proposal to redesign it for them.
Today, though, I have a new perspective on the situation. Working more with the WanderingPaths website is showing me that I still have some learning to do if I want to really create sites that are usable by everyone (I blame this on the prevalence of browsers which are not standards compliant, but it's a reality that I will need to deal with anyway.) I'm choosing now to see the flows that occurred yesterday as a glimpse of future possibility... a goal for me to work toward in my studies of design, so that when the end of the school year approaches I will be in a position to go to them with a proposal that I believe will be so well thought out and well tailored to their needs that they will be unable to say no.
At the very least viewing it that way provides some direction and structure for my studies, and the skills I will learn along the way will be portable to any web design project I may undertake personally or professionally.
