Just hopping on for a few minutes while I'm waiting for my father to be ready to go foodshopping, wanted to update things a bit more:

Things with my grandmother right now are marvelous. Thanks to a technique that the nurse used that we've adopted, my grandmother is eating between four and six times the amount that she would normally eat in a day. It's a really simple thing... making a thick sandwich with several layers of meat and some mustard and bread... one that would normally be WAY too thick for my grandmother to eat even if she was willing to try... and then cutting it up into little bite-sized sandwichettes that she can pick up individually. It's a technique that we really didn't think would work, because normally my grandmother sees a sandwich cut in half and complains about being given two sandwiches and tries to give away the "second one", but for some reason she doesn't do that at all with a sandwich cut up into a lot of very tiny pieces. So instead of giving her a sandwich with one slice of meat or cheese on it and having to fight to get her to eat it, we can give her a sandwich with six times more lunchmeat on it and have her eat 90 to 100 percent of it with no real complaints. Plus she seems more alert and aware... I think it's the combination of extra nutrients and extra attention... and maybe a little extra comprehension since I managed to fix her hearing aide which had apparently not been working quite right. Combined it's all added up to major progress. :)

Not really sure about the situation with the nurse, however... despite how much I like her as a person and am intrigued by her, there are some troubling things about her professionally that weren't pointed out to me until later. Little things, really... at least they seemed little to me, when taken in context... but they kind of add up. I don't know how things will go on that front, at the moment we're planning to see how things go over several visits before coming to any solid conclusions about her professionally, but already there are apparently scheduling conflicts with her and she was also trying to convince us that it might be a good idea to pay extra out of our own money to have someone care for my grandmother for longer periods of time. I don't really know what to make of it... personally I see the logic in that, four hours a day for two days a week is really not that long, but my parents see it as her trying to push for more work and more money from us. I really really hope that things are going to go well, but if they don't at least some progress has been made that we can build on here at home.
